Reduce Your Energy Usage This Fall

Fall is the time for warm sweaters, gold and red foliage, and pumpkin flavored everything. With refreshing temperatures and lower humidity, it’s no wonder fall is a favorite time for many. As you enjoy the season, remember you may need to make a few changes to your energy saving habits. We’ve rounded up a few ideas to help:

  • Replace your HVAC filter, the access point for your home’s air flow. A clean filter is crucial for proper filtration of allergens and dirt particles. Consider adding a REME HALO in-duct air purifier. Tests from the CDC have shown the REME HALO to be 99% effective at killing airborne viruses, as well as pollen, particulates, microbials, gases, mold spores, and more.  Find out more about it here!

  • Set your water heater temperature no higher than 140°. Hotter showers may be tempting, but not worth running up your utility bill.

  • Keep your thermostat at or below 68°. According to the Department of Energy, you can save as much as 10% a year on heating by turning your thermostat back 7° to 10° for 8 hours a day. Our programmable thermostats can help.

  • Take advantage of sunny days. At the start of the day, open your curtains or blinds to allow the sun to warm your home. When day is done, close them to trap in the heat for a cozy evening.

  • The change of the season is the perfect time to inspect your home for drafts. Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal leaky doors and windows. The Department of Energy offers tips on selecting and applying the correct caulk and weatherstripping for your home.

  • To redistribute the warmest air in the room, run your ceiling fans clockwise at the lowest speed.

Before truly cold weather hits, make sure you have the right heat for your home’s needs. We can inspect and maintain your current system, and we offer a range of new units if the time is right for an upgrade.
